LEGISLATIVE UPDATES WILL ALWAYS BE PUBLISHED IN PPR's NEWSLETTER, "THE PRESCRIBER. "
The reality is that licensed psychologists will eventually be allowed, with proper pre or post-doctorate study, to prescribe psychopharmacological medicine in the course of their clinical practice. Already in existence since September 1991, is the U.S. Department of Defense's pilot program Cutting Edge, which trains military psychologists for prescription privileges. In the A.P.A. Monitor, 9-92 issue, then A.P.A. President Jack G. Wiggins, J.R., Ph.D., wrote an article entitled "Time is Ripe to Seek Prescription Authority".
A PSYCHOLOGIST - CONGRESSMAN:
On January 5, 1993, one of the one hundred twenty three new members sworn into the 103rd Congress was the first psychologist elected to the U.S. Congress, Ted Strickland, Ph.D. of Ohio. He is on record as being strongly in favor of health care reform and increasing professional competition which reduces costs. More recently, Hillary Clinton, came out with a request for a "broader mental health coverage" and Tipper Gore, who has B.A. and Masters degrees in psychology, stated, "There is no reason why a diabetic who needs insulin can get it, but someone with manic-depressive illness who needs lithium cannot." Thirty two states currently allow Physician's Assistants to prescribe, some states allow optometrists and nurse practitioners to prescribe.
Prescribing Psychologists' Register believes that the time is more than right to have a national organization specifically devoted to serve as a voice for a large group of licensed psychologists to advance the cause of psychologists wanting to add the necessary additional skills and benefits of prescribing psychoactive medications in their practice.
DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMS:
Local week-end psychopharmacological course workshops, as well as Distance Learning (DVD) courses are now offered to help you qualify to meet whatever legal requirements that might be established in the future.
